My recent featured article on Medium about Tocqueville’s imaginary tweets has been expanded, translated and reinterpreted by my two brilliant editors in Montevideo and Buenos Aires, Martín Orthegui and Sergio Carciofi, respectively.
At the Montevideo Portal, Martín did a superb editing job and translation of the expanded article to Spanish, while adding a humorous subtitle, “United Tweets of America,” and a brief intro.
At the online magazine ATAQD, Sergio changed the title to “The tweets of Tocqueville that Trump did not read,” and he added an intro characterizing the article as an effort to rescue the concept of “civil society” first articulated by Hegel. In English translation, the intro now says:
“Through Alexis de Tocqueville, nineteenth-century French thinker and politician, Michael Meurer rescues the Hegelian concept of civil society and places value on the associative practices of citizens as ways of recreating “a democratic civil society”. In contrast, the scandalous, aggressive and banal use of social networks like Twitter by agents such as Donald Trump, shows us to what extent the United States and the world are victims of a tragicomedy that forgets, offends and puts at risk the democracy they claim to defend.“

Los tuits de Tocqueville que Trump no leyó

Mi reciente artíclo destacado por Mediumsobre los tweets imaginarios de Tocqueville ha sido ampliado, traducido y reinterpretado por mis dos brillantes editores en Montevideo y Buenos Aires, Martín Othegui y Sergio Carciofi, respectivamente.
En el Montevideo Portal, Martín editó la expansión del artículo, hizo una excelente traducción, agregó un subtítulo humorístico “United Tweets of America”y escibió una breve introducción.
En la revista en línea ATAQD, Sergio cambió el título a “Los tweets de Tocqueville que Trump no leyó”, y agregó una introducción que contextualiza el artículo como un esfuerzo para rescatar el concepto de “sociedad civil” articulado por Hegel. La introducción ahora dice:
“A través de Alexis de Tocqueville, pensador y político francés del siglo XIX, Michael Meurer rescata el concepto hegeliano de sociedad civil y pone en valor las prácticas asociativas de los ciudadanos como formas de recrear “una sociedad civil democrática”. En contraste, el uso escandaloso, agresivo y banal de las redes sociales como Twitter por mandatarios como Donald Trump, nos muestra hasta que punto Estados Unidos y el mundo son víctimas de una tragicomedia que olvida, ofende y pone en riesgo a la democracia que dicen defender.”
