Reimagining from the heart

By Michael

Dear friends, on April 15, 2019, I had a heart attack in México City while preparing as lead panelist for a May 2nd public event on political innovation at the National University of México. (UNAM, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México)

My left ventricular artery was blocked. I failed to understand the symptoms at first and was rushed into surgery the early morning of April 16th. Catheterization and angioplasty performed by one of México’s top cardiologists opened the artery, and a permanent medicated stent was implanted.

The recovery process is several months, but the prognosis is good. My underlying health is strong in spite of significant trauma to my heart.

YOU CAN HELP

Your help is invaluable right now. In the US, I have insurance, and in México, most routine medical care is very inexpensive. But heart surgery is another matter. Expenses are piling up with more than $35,000 so far. I cannot travel for another month.

My niece Melissa flew to México City from the US the day after my surgery. She spent a week seeking assistance from the US Embassy, the Veteran’s Administration (I am a decorated veteran.) and Medicare. All three were dead ends with zero assistance. You need to be aware of this. It is not just México, but any country outside US borders.

There are two ways you can help. 1) Donate to a Facebook fundraising drive started by Melissa. 2) Send any donation you can afford to my Venmo account.

REIMAGINING POLITICS WILL CONTINUE

The heart attack and recovery will not stop my vital work on Reimagining Politics. People around the world are helping. The full slate of activities for late 2019 and 2020 will continue.

With help from my Mexican associates, we even managed to have a successful event at UNAM on May 2nd.

As always, you can also still donate to Reimagining Politics at GoFundMe.

Thank you.
