French philosopher Gaston Bachelard, author of works such as The Poetics of Space, is remembered for his articulation of the idea that “scientific investigation is polemical.” Bachelard cautioned that science must stay vigilant not to impede “scientific imagination” by succumbing to “the seduction of the empirical.”
In L’engagement rationaliste, Bachelard went so far as to declare that the goal of an epistemology of science was to “give back to human reason its function of agitation and aggressiveness.”
Today, in a time of rancorous hyper-partisanship fueled by an atmosphere of perpetual crisis and absolutism, poor Bachelard would likely be castigated as a denier of one sort or another.
As an antidote to this kind of civilizational dead end, Reimagining Politics Magazine at Substack has been sharing long form articles mixing philosophy, storytelling, history and politics since 2020.
There are articles and essays on everything from “Covidnomics” (A six part series published in 2020), to philosophic explorations of politics and life in its myriad forms and manifestations.
Whether the subject is canoe shops in Wisconsin, narcos in México, the philosophic roots of the now threatened humanitas ideal, lessons to be learned from Nagasaki poems, movie reviews such as Top Gun: Maverick, home treatment of Covid or skewering today’s fear based politics of permanent crisis, our intention is to leave the weaponized chaos and uncertainty of corporate media behind in order to join together on a creative and imaginative journey into the future.
I hope you will take a look, read, share, subscribe and comment.
