By Michael I recently had the bizarre experience in México City of drinking shots of mezcal from a jar in which a rattlesnake was being marinated. I survived the adventure, but I view it as a kind of metaphor for immersion in poisonous US politics.

This is reflected in the cable news channels mainstreaming their toxic venom into the nation’s political bloodstream 24/7. They are little more than PR proxies for a worldview constricted to whatever options the corporate political parties are peddling.

I advise you to drink as little as possible from this lethally contaminated stream of lies. You will need to look elsewhere to be inspired by our enormous positive potential as political actors and human beings.

And you will need to adjust your timeframe. We are in the midst of a civilizational decline. Recivilizing ourselves will not happen according to the electoral calendar.

A cure for being snakebit

The snakebit 2020 election spectacle is already underway. It will easily top $20 billion in spending and leave the country in emotional chaos. By comparison, my modest goal is to raise only $4,500 by the end of 2018 to continue Reimagining Politics.

I have an ambitious two year plan for Reimagining Politics that includes two new books and two Civic Innovation Tours in 2019. I have literary representation in both the US and Latin America, and planning is already underway for my 2020 election year project, Meet Me at the Station.
