Michael’s Bio

Michael is an internationally published political analyst, writer, educator and media producer. He has worked as a consultant and media strategist on US political campaigns at the local, state and national levels since 2003 through his Meurer Group & Associates consultancy with offices in Los Angeles and México City.

Michael co-founded the 1.7 million member Courage Campaign, traveling for several years to every area of California organizing, training and speaking to progressive grassroots political activists in order to grow membership and increase the organization’s political capacity.

He also worked as a senior advisor to the California Democratic Party and created the concept of Democracy Bonds that was used by the Democratic National Committee to generate a secure base of low dollar donors for the first time in the party’s history.

Since August, 2016, Michael has been traveling worldwide investigating and learning from new political and civic initiatives in Europe and Latin America that are changing the way civic life is conducted. Reports on Michael’s journey have been published in nine nations and translated into five languages.

The most interesting and effective new projects from Michael’s investigations have become part of the Reimagining Politics curriculum. These innovative initiatives are expanding the range of what is politically possible and have enormous potential to be scaled across borders.

Michael graduated with a BA in Liberal Arts from the University of Montana in Missoula with an emphasis in philosophy and history. He will publish three books in 2025 (see covers below) offering a mix of philosophy, reportage and personal reflection distilled from nearly 20 years of travel, research and field investigation at the intersection of politics and culture.
